Jökulsárlón was, without question,my favorite of the places we visited on our first trip to Iceland. I wanted an incredible simple composition for this image –so I chose a single iceberg as my point of interest, and used a long shutter speed to blur the waves. The clean shades of blue simplified the image even further. A short time later,I was reminded of the awesome (and dangerous) power of nature –but for the moment,I tried to capture the incredible peace and tranquility of this beautiful scene. I hope you enjoy it!

Jökulsárlón in Iceland is a breathtaking place. On one side of the road is a beautiful blue, glacial lagoon. On the other side is a black sand beach where giant icebergs lie scattered along the shore. This beauty come with its own peril –I found out the hard way. Right after I took this shot,a rogue wave knocked my off my feet and pushed me underwater. I managed to hold on to my Canon 5D MKII and tripod, but both the camera and lens were destroyed. Thank goodness for my backup camera! And the memory card was not damaged…so I didn’t lose any photographs. Thank goodness! (For more about that singularly disastrous day in Iceland, see Iceland:Day 5.)

Columbia River Gorge is a fantastic place to visit. Numerous, easily accessible waterfalls make it a nature photographer’s paradise. Jay took this shot of Wahclella Falls during our recent trip to Oregon. He chose this composition to avoid including the sky and a man-made bridge at the base of the falls. The spring rains left the moss looking rich and green, and Jay waited until the sun was covered by a cloud so that the scene would be evenly lit.

I took this shot at Pebble Beach in California. This small beach is made up of tiny, multicolored pebbles instead of sand –and most of them are smaller than a pea. Large rocks along the shoreline have been scoured smooth by the waves, and they are carved with strange patterns and holes. I took this shot with a macro lens at f/8 for maximum sharpness.
Because I was so close,I was working with an extremely narrow depth of field. I took three separate shots with slightly adjusted focus points –and stacked them in Photoshop. That let me get all the little pebbles nice and sharp, and still show good detail around the edge of the round hole. I also filled a water bottle with sea water and poured it on the stones before shooting in order to bring out the colors in those pretty pebbles.

Featured Download:Rhododendron in the Mist

I took this shot during my first visit to the Redwood National Forest. The Rhododendrons were in full bloom, and the recent rain had left the forest covered in mist.

I took this shot during our workshop at Nine Mile Pond. My goal was to capture the beautiful light in the sky,and it’s reflection in the water. I wanted to simplify the image as much as possible, but ripples on the pond made the surface choppy, and made the scene seem too busy. The solution? A long shutter speed. I placed a Neutral Density Filter on my lens to reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor, and set my aperture to f/8. A shutter speed of 30 seconds removed any trace of the ripples on the water –leaving the surface smooth and soft.

So –just to stir things up a bit…what do you think? Is it ever OK to “manipulate”a photo? In February, one of our students came to me with a question. “Isn’t processing a photo using Photoshop a ‘manipulation’?”he said. “Isn’t that tantamount to removing the integrity of a photograph?”Let’s put aside for a moment the general lack of knowledge that led to this question. To be fair –this student had very little background information to draw from, and didn’t know how a camera processes a JPG photo,or even the difference between a JPG and a RAW file. His question wasn’t meant to be offensive –though I’m sure many of you are cringing out there.

Still –it’s a loaded question if I ever heard one. It used to be that you weren’t considered to be  a “real”photographer unless you developed your own film, and printed it in a darkroom. Sending it off to a lab was the sure sign of an amateur (Now,there’s a whole different argument there,I know! And for the record –I don’t believe it’s true.) So,by that logic –does it make sense to say that one who processes their own photos using a digital darkroom –the RAW converter or Photoshop –is less of a photographer than one who allows the camera to choose the settings? Is a photographer who puts in the extra effort to finish an image doing something wrong?

All right –so,what does that have to do with this photograph? Well –the fact is,I manipulated this scene. But not in Photoshop. I manipulated it in the field. The scene didn’t look like this in reality. The colors are true to my recollection –but the surface of the water was certainly not smooth. I used a Neutral Density filter and a long shutter speed to completely alter the reality of the scene. So,is this any different than manipulating reality in the dark room,or in Photoshop? Is the photograph a lie? Or is it simply art? No more and no less.

For me,  the answer is simple. My photographs are just art. And that simplifies things even further. When you are making art –the artist gets to make the rules –and worrying about what others think is just a distraction. So I’ll continue to make art –with a little help from Nature.:) But,what do you think? Is it “fair”to manipulate an image? Does it make a difference if the manipulation happens in-camera or in Photoshop? I’d like to hear what you have to say. Seasoned photographers and amateurs alike. What do you think?

Featured Download:Morning Light on Moloka'i

Jay took this shot last year on Maui from Napili Beach overlooking the island of Moloka’i. We stayed in a hotel right on the beach (Thanks,Grandma!),so he crawled out of bed a few minutes before sunrise and just strolled about 50 yards along the sand.  With winter temperatures hovering around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, and snow falling fast and furious –this photo may temp you into booking a vacation to someplace warm. Well…what are you waiting for? There’s still time! You only live once, right?

Featured Download:The Dreaming

I took this shot a few years ago in Bryce Canyon National Park. This is a spectacularly beautiful location at any time of year –but on this day,the fresh snow made Bryce look like a winter wonderland. We arrived while it was still dark, and ours were the only footprints in the newly-fallen snow. Although I wore my warmest clothing,I was shivering with cold –until I pulled out my camera. Suddenly,I forgot about the cold…scenes like this are what nature photographers dream of. Everything came together for me. A beautiful location in perfect conditions. Stunning skies, soft light…and perfect silence.

“May your days be merry and bright!”

Happy Holidays!

Featured Download:Aspen Glen

The Autumn colors are beautiful up here in Northern Ohio this year. In honor of the season,we are offering a free wallpaper download.

I took this shot during a rare sunny moment on a stormy autumn day. We spent the day exploring Colorado’s shockingly beautiful Snowmass Wilderness. It rained most of the day,and we took lots of shots of drifting fog and dripping grasses. When the storm clouds began to stand aside,I positioned my camera near this aspen glen. I wanted to show the beautiful texture of the bark,so I got as close as I could to the pretty trees in the foreground. The sunlight passes through the leaves in front of me,making them seem to glow in this lovely light.

Featured Download:Iceberg Lake

This shot is from our 2006 hike to Iceberg Lake in Glacier National Park. The hike is about 8 miles round trip, and requires about1000 feet of climb –but the trail is well-traveled and well-maintained. Most years, the trail to Iceberg Lakes remains closed because of snow until mid July or early August.

It’s easy to appreciate the beauty of this small lake. The water is a rich, turquoise –colored by glacial sediment –and the lake sits at the bottom of a steep hill side. At this time of year, the meadow was filled with flowers. Heavily overcast skies filtered the mid-day light, and provided a soft and slightly warm glow. We waited for openings in the clouds to let in small spots of sunlight that lit up patches the lake and the surrounding mountains sides.
