One of the biggest reasons I choose to photograph nature is because I love solitude. I find that this is true for many nature and landscape photographers. We seem to share an appreciation –no…it goes beyond that –a NEED for solitude.
I get along with people just fine. I don’t mind speaking to large crowds. I can navigate my way through a city without a problem…
But I’d much rather be in the middle of nowhere. No cars driving by. No airplanes flying overhead. No lawn mowers or leaf blowers or weed trimmers. No radio or television. Just birdsong and the breeze through the branches and the trickle of the water over the rocks. I’m perfectly happy out there for hours. Days. Weeks.

Q and A –Where does an image end up?
I do not consider myself a nature photographer (though much of my photography is nature photography). I also love living in my city. But I do love and need solitude. I hate crowded places. I hate too much noise. Nature,greenery or the sea are my favorite places to find it outdoors.
:) It’s sounds like you are just like me,Melli. My favorite sound is silence,and in the winter I long for the return of green.
I admit that I like winter –I do like white winters. Snow brings such silence and peace into the landscape. Unfortunately we have a grey winter this year…:(
I love the beauty of the snow,Melli –but I miss the sun terribly. We live just south of Lake Erie –and the skies are generally heavily clouded all winter here beneath the lake. It’s not unusual for us to go a couple of weeks without seeing the sun in the middle of winter. This year,the skies have been clear more often,so I’m not missing it so badly.:) I don’t mind the cold,as long as there is sun!
