Quick Tips:Moody Shots

Fog and mist can create great, dramatic lighting for moody images. Take a look at the mist in this shot (above) from Lake Crescent in Washington’s Olympic National Park. It filters the soft, morning light –and along with the wide-angle lens,it helps to create great depth in the image. The mist adds a sense of mystery to the scene.

This second shot from Banff National Park in Alberta,Canada has some similar characteristics. The fog creates a sense of mystery and a certain moodiness in the image. In both cases,we’ve also made the most of “selective lighting”as we chose our subjects. Notice that the light in each image is mostly focused on just one area in each photo.

Use fog and mist to add mystery to a scene, and look for interesting compositions that lend themselves well to a melancholy feel.
