Archives For Computer Wallpaper

I took this shot a few years ago in Bryce Canyon National Park. This is a spectacularly beautiful location at any time of year – but on this day, the fresh snow made Bryce look like a winter wonderland. We arrived while it was still dark, and ours were the only footprints in the newly-fallen snow. Although I wore my warmest clothing, I was shivering with cold – until I pulled out my camera. Suddenly, I forgot about the cold… scenes like this are what nature photographers dream of. Everything came together for me. A beautiful location in perfect conditions. Stunning skies, soft light… and perfect silence.

Happy Holidays!

On the first day of our 2009 workshop in Death Valley (California), it rained hard… and then it rained some more… and a bit more after that. Total Rainfall in 24 hours: 1 inch. That’s a lot for the driest place in North America. All the roads were closed, and some were damaged – but with big storms come great light. The next day, the storm started to clear. Over the course of the next 24 hours, we got some spectacular light conditions and some very unique photos of flooding in Death Valley National Park.

This is a manual blend of 3 images using our iHDR technique. I used a low perspective to capture the flowing streams of water. I focused at my hyperfocal distance to ensure that the entire image was sharply in focus. I chose to keep the image dark in post processing, because of the heavy storm clouds hanging overhead.

We had been up for almost 24 hours the day before, but decided to get up and shoot anyway. It’s tough to get out of bed after just 4 hours of sleep… but it was worth it. We were rewarded with fantastic light and clouds over St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park (Montana).

This image is all about balancing the light. I used a 0.6- stop GND filter to balance the light between the foreground and the sky. Even with the GND filter, I needed to use our manual blending (iHDR) workflow. I also used a 1.2-stop ND filter and polarizer to slow down the shutter speed for a smooth surface on the water.

Featured Download: Aspen Glen

I took this shot during a rare sunny moment on a stormy autumn day. We spent the day exploring Colorado’s shockingly beautiful Snowmass Wilderness. It rained most of the day, and we took lots of photos of drifting fog and dripping grasses. When the storm clouds began to stand aside, I positioned my camera near this aspen glen. I wanted to show the beautiful texture of the bark, so I got as close as I could to the pretty trees in the foreground. The sunlight is passing through the leaves in front of me, making them seem to glow in this lovely light.

This shot is from our wonderful  2008 Yellowstone vacation with the kids. So, this featured download is a tribute to summer…

Our trip to Yellowstone was a fantastic experience for the kids – and it was my first trip to the park as well. This shot doesn’t show the geysers for which the park is best known – but for me, that’s not important. It’s a little slice of summer.

Do you remember how much you loved summer when you were a kid? My childhood was all about playing in the fields behind our home in northern Idaho – and later, in the creek behind our house in Ohio. In Idaho, my friend and I would climb under the barbed wire fence (ouch) and catch frogs in the pasture, or ride our bikes to the lake and watch the turtles. In Ohio, I climbed trees, caught crawdads, and built dams in the creek… and when I was older, I went hiking or canoeing as often as I could. For me, summer is all about the great outdoors.

We try to pass on our love of nature to our children – we take the kids canoeing every summer, and fishing too. They spend hours catching crawdads and minnows and playing in the river near our home every summer. Having kids makes it easy to keep in touch with your inner child, too.  Have you caught a crawdad with your bare hands recently? Built a big fort out of sticks and brush? Saved a butterfly from a spider’s web? Built a canal out of stones along the river’s edge? I did all those things last summer – with my children.

I have to say – this was a fun post to write! :) What do you remember from your childhood summers? I’d love to hear it!

Summer is good for the soul. Enjoy it while it lasts!

I took this shot while slogging through the swamps in Florida’s gorgeous Everglades National Park. These beautiful, lacy lichen grew on trees inside a hardwood hammock. I love it out there!

Jay took this shot last year on Maui from Napili Beach overlooking the island of Moloka’i. We stayed in a hotel right on the beach (Thanks, Grandma!), so he crawled out of bed a few minutes before sunrise and just strolled about 50 yards along the sand.  With winter temperatures hovering around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, and snow falling fast and furious – this photo may temp you into booking a vacation to someplace warm. Well… what are you waiting for? There’s still time! You only live once, right?
